There has been a long history of nursing shortages and high turnover rates of nursing personnel. The main reasons for today’s critical nurse shortages are: the aging of the largest generation in American history. The Baby Boomer Generation is now at retirement age. This generation had its 65th birthday in 2015. This large population of Baby Boomers, coupled with The Health Care Reform Act that made health insurance available to all, added 30 million people requiring care to the healthcare arena. There are simply not enough licensed nurses to care for the enormous number of people seeking healthcare.
